Job Summary
Conduct biological sampling from recreational head boat fisheries in the Southeastern U.S. by identifying fish to species level, measuring lengths, recording weights and sex, and collecting otoliths and spines per protocol. Serve as the NOAA field representative to anglers and operators, then process, QA/QC, and analyze biological samples in the laboratory, uploading data to the Oracle system monthly. Manage daily data entry, validate trip reports, reconcile vessel compliance issues, and update head boat activity reports weekly. Assist staff with field and lab data collection, participate in public outreach events and scientific meetings, and maintain government equipment. Submit weekly activity reports and complete deliverables for the Chief, Catch Validation and Biosampling Branch.
Required Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of Southeast U.S. Atlantic marine fish identification
- BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study
- Three (3) years of relevant experience
- Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of data management and analysis of fishery data
- Ability to perform statistical analysis and provide results in presentation or report form
Desired Qualifications
- Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys
- Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs
- Experience collecting catch and effort information from recreational fishermen
- Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish
