Job Summary
Division Counsel – Research provides broad legal support to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s research enterprise with emphasis on research regulatory compliance and contracting. Responsibilities include legal analysis and counsel on federal and institutional research compliance rules (e.g., Common Rule, PHS policies on research misconduct, and financial conflict-of-interest regulations); developing and reviewing internal policies on Other Support, foreign components, research misconduct, and conflict-of-interest management; advising on grant-related matters; drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of research-related agreements (clinical trial agreements, NDAs, MTAs, DUAs, IP/technology agreements, international agreements, subawards); supporting regulatory committees (IRB, IBC, IACUC); coordinating with the Office of Sponsored Programs and outside counsel; and collaborating with the General Counsel and Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization. Essential interpersonal, negotiation, and confidentiality skills are required; must stay current with evolving laws and enforcement trends and effectively represent institutional interests.
Required Qualifications
- JD degree from an ABA accredited law school
- State of Tennessee licensure or registration required within 12 months of employment
- In-House Counsel Practice Certificate (or ability to obtain) within 12 months
- Five to seven years of progressively responsible legal experience related to clinical research compliance or supporting healthcare/life sciences clients (preferred)
