Job Summary

Develop and manage a comprehensive school health program consistent with Massachusetts guidelines, including office coverage, enrollment management, and emergency planning. Collaborate with administrators, physicians, and community providers to establish policies, conduct needs assessments, and implement state-mandated programs like immunization surveillance. Deliver daily nursing services by administering medications, providing first aid, managing communicable diseases, and responding to child neglect or abuse issues as required by statute. Create individualized health care plans for students, conduct health screenings, and deliver health education to students, families, and staff. Maintain comprehensive health records, prepare reports for school officials and the DPH, and participate in special education meetings to identify health-related needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Be licensed as a school nurse by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Initial License
  • Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in nursing
  • A minimum of 2 full years of employment as a Registered Nurse in child health, community health, or other relevant clinical setting
  • Current certification in CPR/AED
  • Completion of an orientation program based on the requirements for delivery of school health services as defined by the Department of Public Health
  • Passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills test
  • Possession of an initial license
  • Three years employment as a school nurse
  • Achievement and maintenance of certification or licensure by a nationally recognized professional nursing association as a school nurse, community health nurse, or a pediatric/family/school nurse practitioner
  • A master's degree program that may include credits earned in a master's degree program for the Initial License in community health, health education, nursing, or public health
