Job Summary
Monitor weather conditions, aircraft position reports, and aeronautical navigation charts to evaluate flight safety and select economical routes. Authorize, regulate, and terminate aircraft flights in accordance with company and governmental regulations, preparing flight plans with maximum allowable weights and required data. Compute fuel requirements, distance, and maintenance limitations using FAA guidelines, then prepare and sign the dispatch release. Delay, divert, or cancel flights if unsafe conditions threaten safety, and advise the pilot in command of significant changes. Assist the pilot in command during emergencies to ensure safe completion of the flight. Maintain required security clearance.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance
- Shares equal and joint responsibility with the pilot in command for the safety and operational control of the flight
- Authorizes, regulates, controls, and terminates aircraft flights in accordance with company and governmental regulations and policies
- Reviews and evaluates weather information to determine potential flight safety hazards
- Computes the amount of fuel required, distance of flight, maintenance limitations, weather conditions, and other factors affecting safety of flight using company and FAA established guidelines
- Prepares flight plans with information including maximum allowable takeoff and landing weights, weather reports, field conditions, METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, PIREPs, and other information required for the safe completion of the flight
- Prepares and signs the dispatch release which is a legal document providing authorization for the flight to depart
- Authorized by the FAA to delay, divert, or cancel a flight if unsafe conditions pose a threat to the safety of the aircraft, passengers, cargo, or flight
- Monitors weather conditions, aircraft position reports, aeronautical navigation charts and aircraft radio calls to evaluate the progress and safety of the flight
- Advises the pilot in command of significant changes to weather or the flight plan and recommends changes as required for the continued safe operation of the flight
- Assist the pilot in command of an aircraft in an emergency by providing any assistance necessary to ensure safe completion of the flight
