Job Summary

Plan, organize, and direct the overall operation of the Activity Department in accordance with federal, state, and local standards while maintaining a program of activities designed to meet the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident. Visit residents regularly to evaluate needs, document and report significant findings to the nursing department, and encourage participation in activities of daily living. Establish resident care goals within the framework of the therapeutic team, maintain a liaison with other department supervisors to plan activities, and participate in public relations, media coverage, and volunteer efforts. Demonstrate leadership skills to maximize employee potential, ensure compliance with all laws and ethical standards, and assist in resident evacuation during emergencies.

Required Qualifications

Experience running a recreation department within a skilled nursing facility
Must meet the minimum of TRD requirements per DPH
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public
Must be knowledgeable in the Privacy Rule and ensure all staff comply with facility privacy practices policies and procedures
Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel
Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning
Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing policies and procedures
Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies
Must be able to push, pull or lift, all without restrictions up to 51 lbs
Moving various equipment up to about 75 pounds may be required, but rarely
Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents in emergencies
Must be able to lift 51 lbs
Must be able to lift 75 lbs
Must be available for weekends
Must be available for holidays
Must be available for work beyond normal working hours
Must be available for work in other positions temporarily
Must be able to work with hostile and emotionally upset residents
