Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction (grades 6-12)

Job Summary

Lead and support all aspects of secondary curriculum and instruction, integrating technology into the instructional program for grades 6-12. Develops, leads, and implements targeted professional learning for teachers to improve core curriculum strategies and student proficiency. Promotes collaborative long- and short-term planning, instructional coaching, and the use of differentiated instruction and Science of Reading. Identifies subgroup performance weaknesses and partners with principals to drive improvement. Supervises instruction through classroom observations, assessment analysis, and consultation. Administers and analyzes federal, state, and local testing programs, including creating an annual district-wide assessment calendar. Represents the division in meetings regarding curriculum, assessment, and technology. Coordinates programming for gifted learners, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities. Ensures compliance with federal and state policies, preparing required reports to the Virginia Department of Education and the school board. Manages the instructional budget for areas of responsibility.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Virginia Literacy Act
  • Five years' successful experience as a classroom teacher or other comparable combination of relevant educational leadership experience
  • Administrative and/or supervisory experience as a building level or program administrator
  • Experience with the development and monitoring of curriculum and instruction
  • Experience with effective assessment and development, and demonstrated evidence of successful and effective literacy and numeracy program/skills implementation
  • Strong knowledge of effective school improvement and professional learning strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with a comprehensive Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), including effective framework for tiered instruction, progress monitoring, and intervention practices that yield desirable results for both academics and student behavior and wellness
  • Experience with the administration of standardized testing either at the school, division, or state level
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze relevant assessment data that has resulted in student growth and achievement
  • Experience with instruction or programs for students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and students identified as gifted or other exceptional ability
  • Possesses a zeal for learning leadership through personal, organizational, and leadership
