Job Summary

Direct and supervise the facilities and maintenance department to ensure the safe, efficient operation of the school district's plant, buildings, and grounds. Conduct regular inspections of roofs, HVAC systems, and playing fields; manage the federal asbestos program and establish preventative maintenance schedules. Lead personnel, coordinate work and vacation schedules, and oversee outside vendors for repairs. Manage the department budget, order supplies, and ensure compliance with all safety and code requirements. Administer emergency repair protocols and represent the district professionally with stakeholders, parents, and building principals.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Valid driver's license
  • CDL with school transportation endorsement
  • Training in the proper care and storage of chemicals, e.g., hazards communication training
  • Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings, and labels
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to operate machinery
  • Training in OSHA/PERRP rules and regulations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to discuss specific problems with contractors to determine proper course of action
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to manage and evaluate personnel
  • Ability to manage resources
  • Ability to complete maintenance tasks on the wide range of building systems
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations applicable to the transportation of students and to the operation of student transportation vehicles
  • Ability to implement and lead in-service programs
  • Must be physically able to wear necessary personal protective equipment as necessary, e.g., respirator, hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety clothing
  • Must be prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days including calamity days
  • Occasional evening/weekend work
  • Frequent travel between buildings and to get supplies
  • Occasional repetitive hand motion, e.g., use of hand tools
  • Frequent requirement to work near moving mechanical parts, e.g., drill press, circular saw, table saw, hand tools, pulleys, and pumps
  • Occasional requirement to work in high places
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, dangerous or caustic chemicals, e.g., welding fumes, sawdust, masonry dust, and pollens
  • Occasional exposure to loud noises, e.g., power tools and power machinery
  • Occasional lifting, pulling and pushing of up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional requirement to work overtime
  • Clear BCI/FBI background checks

Desired Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education or industry certification
  • Experience in commercial/educational facilities management/maintenance and in pupil transportation
  • Prior supervisory/management experience
  • Prior work experience in a school district or other educational environment
  • Training and experience in the repair, maintenance and installation of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems
