Job Summary
Director of Philanthropy to lead a comprehensive fundraising strategy for AURA, cultivating relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individual donors to secure resources for Centers, programs, and initiatives; responsibilities include defining funding strategies, multi-year fundraising tactics, managing a philanthropy budget and ROI expectations, supervising fundraising CRM use, engaging with the AURA Board and Audit Committee, and building a small team; collaboration across Centers, donor-centric fundraising, and pursuing grant opportunities and innovative funding proposals with foundations and corporate funders; ensure compliance with fundraising ethics and legislation, and foster supporter relationships to grow the organization’s philanthropic revenue.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with focus on philanthropy, fundraising, and/or donor relations; 10+ years preferred
- Quantifiable, positive track record of raising funds through foundations, philanthropic organizations, corporate industry organizations, and high net worth individuals (including single family offices)
- Professional writing and speaking skills, including ability to communicate with scientists and senior executives, funding partners, and staff
- Quantifiable, positive record of revenue generation with bottom-line impact; experience managing budgets and operations
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Professional computer skills including word processing and CRM management; Virtuous familiarity is a plus
- Proven ability to motivate, supervise, and develop a small team
- Professional interpersonal skills to lead and engage volunteers and staff
- Collaborative in nature with strong listening and facilitation skills
- Ability to work independently and in a matrixed organization
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Knowledge of fundraising for scientific organizations (preferred)
- Experience with science/STEM fundraising (preferred)
- Familiarity with federal funding structures (e.g., NSF, NASA) and nonprofit compliance (preferred)
- Experience with US federal government grants (desired)
- Advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus
- CFRE certification is a plus
