Job Summary

Distribute approximately $15M in annual public arts funding through a contract with the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs. Manage a team to fairly and equitably distribute funding across the City's diverse cultural community while ensuring systems integrity, transparency, and ethical compliance. Lead the end-to-end grant lifecycle, from setting strategy and calendar to creating workshops, reporting to the Board, and ensuring timely, accurate grantees payments. Troubleshoot complex problems to maintain compassion and systems integrity while adapting to local, regional, and national trends in arts and philanthropy.

Required Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of best practices in public or private grantmaking
  • Experience in the arts, philanthropy, or cultural nonprofit sectors
  • Strong understanding of equity-driven funding practices and systems thinking
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and managing complex workflows
  • Proven ability to build a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and impact
  • Skilled at supporting professional development and cross-functional collaboration
  • At least five years of experience designing, implementing, and improving operational systems or grant processes
  • Strong project and change management skills, with the ability to lead through complexity
  • Experience using data and technology to drive process improvements and transparency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation
  • Comfortable serving as a visible representative of the organization at public events, community forums, and meetings with civic leaders
  • Ability to build trust across a wide range of stakeholders, including grantees, public officials, and internal teams
  • Skilled at translating technical and process-related information in clear, accessible language for diverse audiences
  • A strong personal and professional commitment to racial and social equity
  • Grace under pressure, a solutions-oriented mindset, and comfort with ambiguity
  • High attention to detail, follow-through, and accountability—for self and others
