Job Summary
Lead the Emergency Department by providing direct and indirect nursing care, managing 24/7 operations, and fostering a patient-centered environment. Select, hire, and train Team Members while developing policies, procedures, and protocols based on current literature and clinician input. Supervise daily functions, round on staff to ensure adherence to standards, evaluate performance, and manage the department's operating budget and equipment needs. Coordinate with the medical director, hospital administration, and clinicians to assess care delivery requirements and participate in quality assurance programs. Facilitate EMS and nursing education, build relationships with EMS crews, and exhibit flexibility to assist during increased patient loads, disasters, or short-staff situations. Work beyond normal hours as needed, subject to callbacks during emergency conditions such as mass traumas or evacuations.
Required Qualifications
- Associates in Nursing
- Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in Texas
- Currently certified in TNCC, ACLS, BLS and ATCN
- 3 years clinical experience in emergency care
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
- Ability to regularly stand, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching
- Ability to work Monday through Friday 8 hours per day with overtime as needed
- Ability to work schedule flexibility based on needs of the facility
- Occasional travel for continuing education
- Knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to hospital setting
- Exhibits leadership and supervisory abilities
- Willingness to work collaboratively with other Team Members
- Exhibits flexibility to assist the Emergency Department in times of increased patient load, disaster and/or short staff
- Ability to work beyond normal working hours
- Subject to callback during emergency conditions (mass traumas, evacuation, disaster, etc.)
- Ability to work with patients in the group specific to the environment of care as necessary
- Ability to work with infants (birth to 12months)
- Ability to work with toddlers (1-4 years)
- Ability to work with preschoolers (4-6 years)
- Ability to work with school age children (6-12 years)
- Ability to work with adolescents (12-18 years)

- Ability to work with hostile and emotionally unstable patients, families, Team Members, and visitors
- Ability to work with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all circumstances and conditions
- Ability to work with exposure to blood and body fluids
- Ability to work with potential exposure to infectious processes
- Ability to work with potential exposure to hazardous substances
- Ability to work with potential musculoskeletal injuries
- Ability to work with equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday
- Ability to work with reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other contaminants
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions
- Ability to support and adhere to hospital policies, procedures, philosophy, and mission
- Ability to promote an environment that supports best nursing practices and fosters transformation of bedside nursing
- Ability to provide leadership for the unit
- Ability to contribute to team efforts and use appropriate conflict management skills proactively to resolve intradepartmental and interdepartmental grievances/concerns
- Ability to select, hire, and train ED Team Members
- Ability to develop policies and procedures based on current literature, input from clinicians and other sources information from patient care evaluations
- Ability to coordinate with the medical director, hospital administration and clinicians to assess the need for policies, procedures and protocols
- Ability to supervise and ensure the accurate collecting, coding, scoring and developing of processes for validation of data entered into the registry
- Ability to evaluate Team Member performance and make recommendations for merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary action as applicable
- Ability to provide fiscal management by developing and recommending department operating budget as instructed and insure compliance
- Ability to evaluate and justify equipment and supply needs
- Ability to direct the day-to-day function of the Emergency Department in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern these areas
- Ability to participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the hospital's quality assurance program in the Emergency Department
- Ability to participate in multiple organizational-wide and community-based committees as necessary and requested
- Ability to round to ensure that ED Team Members perform their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards
- Ability to review complaints and grievances made or filed by Emergency Department Team Members
- Ability to facilitate EMS and Nursing education
- Ability to build relationships with EMS crews
