Job Summary
Lead the daily operations of the Design Department by providing leadership, coaching, and accountability for design personnel while managing recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and succession planning. Establish departmental priorities, allocate resources to meet production schedules, and monitor workload, backlog, and productivity to ensure projects complete accurately and on time. Serve as the primary contact for customers, sales, manufacturing, engineering, and operations regarding design activities, project status, and estimated completion dates. Review design work for consistency, accuracy, quality, and compliance with company standards, engineering requirements, and building codes. Coach designers on software applications and engineering principles, partner with IT to maintain design systems, and oversee design files and documentation. Collaborate with Sales, Manufacturing, Operations, and Engineering to improve communication and project execution, preparing regular operational reports for the Vice President of Design. Maintain availability after normal business hours as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, architecture, construction management, or a related field preferred
- 10+ years of related experience and/or training in truss construction and design, including proven experience as a truss designer or similar role in the building materials or construction industry
- Experience managing teams and developing employees, both in-house and remote
- Ability to effectively present information to senior leadership, customers, public groups, and/or boards of directors
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, financial reports, and legal documents
- Ability to respond to complex inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in wall panel design, material optimization, and hardware estimating is strongly preferred
- Proficiency with truss design software, preferably Alpine and/or MiTek
