Director of Credit Risk
$138,380–$170,940 year
Remote · New York City, New York, United States or San Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Lead Relay's Credit & Spend Management tribe as a cross-functional GM, guiding 6–8 direct reports and embedded product, engineering, data, and design teams. Build Relay’s in-house credit engine (monitoring infrastructure and decisioning systems), own credit policy and underwriting strategy (including exception handling, manual reviews, and escalations), and expand the lending portfolio from a single product to a multi-product suite. Own the credit and debit P&L and drive sustainable growth while balancing risk and capital appetite. Partner with banking partners, capital providers, and internal stakeholders to align on strategy, performance, and compliance. The role requires hands-on leadership, data-driven decision making, and the ability to scale credit products in a fintech environment, with a focus on SMB underwriting and end-to-end lifecycle management from origination through charge-off.
Required Qualifications
- 5 to 7 years of hands-on experience in credit strategy and analytics with direct ownership of underwriting policies and models
- Deep experience in SMB underwriting; demonstrated lending decisions based on business fundamentals
- Experience building or scaling credit products in fintech or similar fast-paced environments (0→1 or early-stage systems)
- Strong grasp of credit infrastructure and data; comfortable with APIs, vendor models, and translating risk-sharing agreements into financial outcomes
- Familiarity with alternative data sources (e.g., Plaid, accounting integrations, commercial bureaus) and how to incorporate them into underwriting
- Experience working with bank partners, regulators, or examiners in a credit context
- Strong ownership mindset for both strategy and execution
