Job Summary
Director of Conservation role at San Antonio Zoo: lead and shape the conservation and research program, manage and support a long-standing conservation team, oversee development of local, regional, and international trips through the Zoo Travel program, secure external funding through grants and donor engagement, and collaborate with VP of Conservation & Research and stakeholders to advance conservation initiatives. Expect travel to field sites and events, leadership of a team of conservation professionals, strong writing and presentation requirements, fundraising responsibilities, interaction with wildlife officials and donors, and a flexible schedule including events and travel. The ideal candidate demonstrates success in obtaining funding, strong communication skills, ability to work with partners and board members, and the capacity to work in field conditions and manage multiple programs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife or conservation biology, zoology, biology, or a related field
- previous leadership experience
- strong writing skills with demonstrated success in landing funding for a project
- grant writing experience and ability to prepare proposals and reports for state/federal agencies and donors
- ability to travel internationally and domestically for fieldwork and program development
- valid driver's license (Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain)
- valid US passport or ability to obtain within six months of start date
- ability to manage time effectively and work with minimal micromanagement
- excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral
- experience in fundraising or securing external funding and grants
- ability to work with diverse stakeholders including state wildlife officials, donors, and board members
- willingness to travel to multiple institutions and field sites, nationally and internationally
- ability to lead and develop a team of conservation professionals
- flexible schedule and willingness to work irregular hours
- proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- physical ability to conduct fieldwork and carry equipment as needed
- minimum 18 years of age with clean driving record
- experience with conservation programs and reporting to agencies
