Director of Communications

Lead Communications for Tolan by shaping and telling two stories: the product narrative and the broader company narrative around AI relationships and wellbeing. Own messaging strategy, write pitches and messaging that resonates across national outlets (e.g., The New York Times, The Atlantic) and diverse media, manage earned media relationships with journalists, editors, and producers, and drive regional and national media coverage. Build and own Tolan's media assets—original content, video, and podcasts—and maintain a steady drumbeat of storytelling across owned channels. Collaborate with the CEO and founders to define what Tolan is and why it matters, while balancing prestige storytelling with hands-on execution. Proactively attract coverage, manage media campaigns, and demonstrate impact through measurable placements and content programs. The role requires senior leadership in communications, with the ability to work across media types and audiences and to operate with limited budgets or teams. Bonus points for personal platform ownership and a track record of landing national coverage; traditional comms background is not a prerequisite for exceptional candidates.
