Job Summary

Director of Bookstore & Resource Center responsible for transforming The King Center’s on-site bookstore and gift shop and its digital storefront into a best-in-class retail and e-commerce operation. Own full retail P&L across in-store and online channels, including merchandising, inventory, e-commerce, staffing, customer experience, and revenue growth. Set pricing, promotions, and markdown strategies; manage annual budget; analyze KPIs and customer trends. Develop new revenue streams (exclusive and licensed King Center merchandise, publications, commemorative items) and partnerships. Oversee daily on-site operations, merchandising, POS systems, cash handling, and loss prevention. Build and grow the online store with omnichannel integration, including product photography, descriptions, inventory sync, order fulfillment, and digital marketing in coordination with the marketing team. Lead end-to-end inventory management, vendor negotiations, and regular audits. Recruit, train, schedule, and develop retail and e-commerce staff and volunteers, upholding service standards aligned with The King Center’s values and Dr. King’s nonviolent principles.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, retail management, marketing, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive retail management experience, including full P&L responsibility
  • Demonstrated success growing revenue across brick-and-mortar and e-commerce
  • Hands-on experience with POS and e-commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, Square, or comparable)
  • Inventory management systems
  • Retail analytics
  • Proven team leadership, staff development, and scheduling experience
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and margin management
  • Experience in merchandising, inventory management, pricing, promotions, and inventory turn
  • Ability to recruit, train, and develop retail associates, e-commerce staff, and volunteers
  • Knowledge of omnichannel retail and digital marketing preferred
  • Genuine connection to mission of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
