Job Summary
Director of Artificial Intelligence at a leading AmLaw 100 law firm role focused on hands-on design, development, and deployment of agentic AI systems. Responsibilities include architecting and shipping agentic AI applications, building data tooling backbones, selecting and orchestrating models (OpenAI, Claude, Google, open-weight locally hosted models), implementing RAG pipelines, ensuring data security and privilege protections, and partnering with security, IT, KM, and attorneys. Requires practical, hands-on engineering experience, proficiency with Python, APIs, SQL, vector databases, and experience deploying AI under strict confidentiality and governance constraints. Strong collaboration with cross-functional teams and vendors, and leadership of a small engineering/AI team.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of technology experience, including a minimum 3 years building and deploying production AI/ML applications
- Demonstrated experience building agentic AI systems
- Strong software engineering skills, including Python, REST/streaming APIs, SQL and vector databases
- Hands-on experience with RAG pipelines, embeddings, evaluation, and observability for LLM and agent applications
- Working knowledge of utilizing open-weight models, including on-premises or private-cloud GPU infrastructure
- Demonstrated experience designing AI systems under strict security, privacy, and confidentiality constraints
- Working knowledge of AI governance and risk frameworks (e.g., ISO/IEC 42001, NIST AI RMF)
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with security, IT, and non-technical stakeholders
