Job Summary
NovaTech Automation seeks a seasoned Director of Hardware Engineering to provide strategic and technical leadership across all hardware development disciplines. Lead hardware design activities (PCB, embedded platforms, power/analog, signal integrity), establish architecture standards, drive design automation, and oversee hardware certification, QA/RMA, and international teams. Collaborate with software and product teams to ensure co-design alignment; manage schedules, resources, and risk; shape a high-performance, globally distributed hardware organization focused on grid infrastructure and substation automation hardware components and approvals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- 15 or more years of progressive hardware engineering experience
- 8+ years in a formal engineering management or director-level role
- Deep PCB design and layout experience for high-density mixed-signal industrial products
- Hands-on experience with embedded hardware platforms (Xilinx Zynq-7000 or similar, NXP i.MX)
- Proficiency in analog/power supply design (DC/DC, isolation, protection)
- Experience with SPICE-based simulation tools (Altium, LTspice)
- FPGA development toolchains
- Reliability analysis using MIL-HDBK-217 or Telcordia SR-332
- DFMEA/DFMEA facilitation across teams
- Component obsolescence management and AVL governance
- Hardware design for testability (DFT, ICT, boundary scan)
- Familiarity with hardware certification programs (UL 61010-1, cUL, FCC, CE)
- IEC 61850-3 environmental requirements
- Experience managing multi-site engineering teams
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Desired Qualifications
- Experience leading multi-site hardware organizations
- Expertise in embedded hardware design (PCB, analog, power, signal integrity)
- Strong background with Xilinx Zynq-7000 or similar SoCs and NXP i.MX
- Proven ability to drive hardware architecture standards and design automation
- FMEA/DFMEA, MIL-HDBK-217 or Telcordia SR-332 reliability analysis
- Experience with hardware certification (UL/IEC/CE/FCC) and environmental requirements
- Ability to manage hardware teams across US and international locations
- Experience with DFT, ICT, boundary-scan, and production test strategies
- Strong collaboration with software/product teams for co-design
- Leadership in a distributed engineering organization
- Experience with substation automation or grid infrastructure hardware (preferred)
- Experience with ruggedized industrial hardware and environmental testing (preferred)
- Experience with industrial networking and cybersecurity requirements (IEC 62443) (preferred)
- Experience with manufacturing support, DFM reviews, and production readiness (preferred)
