Director, Development and Communications

Job Summary
Manage and grow a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship while overseeing development operations, pipeline forecasting, and revenue reporting. Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising plan, prepare grant proposals, and coordinate the annual fundraising Gala and other donor events. Create donor-facing communications, pitch decks, and appeals; oversee content creation for newsletters, social media, and press releases; and respond to fastbreaking news with press advisories and statements. Supervise the development and communication team, including hiring, training, and managing external vendors for photography and design. Collaborate with leadership to align organizational budgets with fundraising goals and track progress across individuals, corporations, foundations, and government sources.
Required Qualifications
- Fluency in both English and Spanish
- At least 8 years of fundraising experience
- Experience securing and managing foundation grants
- 3 years management experience
- Proven ability to lead a team
- At least 5 years of experience in communications
- Experience with press management and relations
- Familiarity with press outlets in New York City
- Experience overseeing organizational social media channels
- Experience working in a fast-paced non-profit environment
- Commitment to racial and economic justice
- Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills
- Self-motivated, hardworking individual with ability to work independently
- Demonstrated experience building strong relationships with high-level allies and donors
- Detail-oriented while prioritizing big-picture strategies
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities
- Excellent people and relationship building skills
- Extensive knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok)
- Knowledge of office technology and software (Google Apps, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Strong written and verbal communications skills in English and Spanish
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as needed
- Deep knowledge of the funding and media landscape in New York City and beyond
- Strong track record of building, sustaining, and growing long-term donor relationships with individuals, foundations, corporation, and government agencies
- Familiarity with managing external relations and marketing plans
- Experienced public speaker
- Ability to effectively communicate WJP's programs and mission
- Tactical, multitasking thinker
- Ability to work simultaneously on immediate goals and long-term strategies

- Ability to lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 25 pounds

Desired Qualifications
- Additional fluency in French
