Job Summary
Director of Compensation to lead the design, administration, and evaluation of base and incentive compensation programs aligned with RAND’s objectives. Responsibilities include developing and implementing compensation plans, analyzing internal and external data, advising management on compensation matters, designing and communicating new programs, creating reporting tools to monitor effectiveness, and managing relationships with external consultants and committee leadership. Requires building fair, compliant programs and leading a team; collaboration with senior HR and leadership; and oversight of compensation-related programs and recognition awards. 50% onsite presence across RAND offices in Santa Monica, CA; Washington, DC; and Pittsburgh, PA. Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Certifications such as CCP or SHRM/HR certifications are desirable. Experience: minimum 10 years in compensation with at least 6 years building base/incentive plans and 2+ years managing teams. Skills: advanced Excel/Word, HR systems (Workday a plus), data analytics, job architecture, reporting, stakeholder management, and strong communication.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or equivalent certification highly desirable
- SHRM-SCP, SPHR, HRMC, CCP preferred
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in HR compensation functions
- At least 6 years’ experience developing and implementing base and incentive compensation plans
- Minimum of 2 years of direct team management experience
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HCM systems
- Experience in an academic or research organization preferred
- Experience with data analytics, automation, or AI tools in compensation/HR/workforce planning preferred
- Experience in job architecture frameworks (job families, leveling guides, career paths) a plus
- Prior Workday experience a plus
