Director, Assistant General Counsel - Intellectual Property

Job Summary
Protect, manage, and leverage Cboe intellectual property through comprehensive strategies aligned with business objectives, including managing patent and trademark applications before the USPTO, assessing registrability, and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses. Execute IP litigation, disputes, and due diligence while managing external counsel on U.S. and foreign matters. Develop and implement IP policies, provide counsel to senior management, and educate stakeholders on emerging risks in financial technology, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. Collaborate across the organization to support marketing review, competitive landscape analysis, and response to fraudulent IP use. Maintain fluency in domestic and international IP laws and regulations while staying current on developments.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a registered attorney
- At least 5 years of experience as a patent attorney supporting technology-driven businesses
- Focus on software and other technology
- Previous employment with highly regulated institutions, including financial institutions
- Experience with intellectual property, particularly patents
- Sophisticated knowledge of U.S. intellectual property laws related to patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets
- Ability to create and execute detailed project plans
- Ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders
- Prior employment in financial services
- Experience with IP litigation and administrative proceedings
- Familiarity with international intellectual property laws
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to articulate complex concepts with the level of detail that is necessary for various regulatory and other written communications
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in group situations
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments
- Strong time management experience and skills
- Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously with accuracy and quality
- Ability to adjust to changes in priorities and situations
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Member in good standing of at least one state bar association
- Bachelor's Degree
- Juris Doctorate
- Licensed to practice law
- USPTO registration
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
- Proficiency in document management and other office technologies
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship now or in the future
- Four day in office work model
- Location in Chicago, Illinois
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with intellectual property, particularly patents, related to and previous employment with highly regulated institutions, including financial institutions
- Sophisticated knowledge of U.S. intellectual property laws related to patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets (EU is a plus)
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and in interactions with internal and external contacts
