Job Summary
Director, Animal Resource Program and Chief, Division of Comparative Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine leads the ARP, serves as senior comparative medicine leader within the Department of Surgery, and ensures high standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and research support. Oversees veterinary care, husbandry, technical services, and research support; leads AAALAC accreditation activities; collaborates with IACUC, compliance, investigators, and core facilities; guides strategic planning, financial operations, workforce development, and integration of translational research across the biomedical enterprise; this is a term, on-site position located in Hershey, PA. Requires DVM/VMD, ACLAM or equivalent, PA veterinary licensure, and proven leadership in a comparable program, with extensive knowledge of regulations and accreditation standards; responsibilities include regulatory compliance, clinical and veterinary leadership, research collaboration, financial/operational leadership, and academic leadership within the Department of Surgery; applicant materials should be submitted via Penn State’s job board with required documents.
Required Qualifications
- DVM/VMD (or equivalent veterinary degree)
- Board certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or equivalent (e.g., ECLAM)
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in Pennsylvania
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a comparative medicine or laboratory animal program
- Demonstrated experience in veterinary clinical and emergency care, and in vivo bio methodology training
- Clinical experience with non-rodent animal research models, including pre- and post-operative care
- Extensive knowledge of animal welfare regulations and accreditation standards; Research animal models and biomedical research support
- Proven ability to lead complex teams, manage institutional risk, and drive strategic initiatives
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Preferred: 10 years leadership and managerial experience in an academic research program using animal models
- Prior AAALAC accreditation and USDA inspections experience
- Aptitude for technology solutions (e.g., animal EMR, inventory tracking systems)
