Job Summary

Director, AI Policy at the Federation of American Scientists to lead a growing AI portfolio across AI safety and security, fair and trustworthy AI, responsible public-sector use, AI R&D, and AI for public missions. Responsible for setting strategy, managing staff, overseeing grant-funded projects, fundraising and partnerships, and engaging policymakers. Will manage two mid-level hires, participate in their final selection, and drive policy entrepreneurship to advance responsible governance of transformative AI technologies. The role requires strong leadership, vision, relationship-building, and policy development across diverse sectors, with a hybrid work arrangement (2–3 days on-site in Washington, DC, and 2–3 days remote) and a salary range of $175,000–$215,000. Will operate within an organization prioritizing fairness, inclusion, transparency, and impact.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience across government, think tanks, philanthropy, civil society, academia, industry, or another policy-relevant institution
  • substantial work on AI, emerging technology, national security, science and technology policy, civil rights, or related issues
  • fluency in AI safety and security policy, catastrophic and systemic risks from advanced AI systems
  • expertise in AI safety and security, fair and trustworthy AI, responsible public-sector use, AI R&D, or related topics
  • excellent writing and editing skills in AI policy, technology governance, national security, civil rights, or related topics
  • experience managing people and complex projects
  • ability to develop multi-year strategies to expand reach, impact, and sustainability of AI portfolio
  • experience fundraising and partnerships with philanthropic funders
  • strong relationship management skills with researchers, advocates, funders, policymakers, civil society organizations, industry experts
  • preferred: experience in government, Capitol Hill, federal agency, or state policy role
  • preferred: hands-on technical experience in AI/ML/CS
  • advanced degree in a relevant field (MS/JD/MPP/MPA/MBA/PhD)
