Job Summary
Operates horizontal directional drill and related equipment per blueprints and plans, ensuring proper bore paths and depths while maintaining safety and compliance. Duties include reading blueprints, operating drill and locating equipment, Hydro Vac, backhoe, trencher, and other heavy machinery; performing routine equipment maintenance; assisting with construction clean-up; driving trucks with trailers; serving as Groundsman for line crews; and adhering to safety policies, DOT requirements, and company safety culture. Requires the ability to travel, possess a valid Class A CDL, and willingness to work irregular hours during storm emergencies or as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma Preferred
- CDL Class A endorsement or ability to obtain within company policy
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel
- DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and FMCSA regulations
- Horizontal directional drill experience
- Read and understand blueprints
- Underground utility experience with fiber/electric/gas utilities preferred
- Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 3 months of accepting position (preferred)
- Ability to operate multiple equipment (horizontal directional drill, Hydro Vac, backhoe, trencher, digger/derrick truck)
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of safety rules and construction practices
- Ability to multitask and handle emergencies calmly
