Job Summary

Directing Attorneys at CILS oversee the day-to-day operation of the Southern Office in Escondido, ensuring high-quality legal work for Native American clients, mentoring staff, supervising attorneys and support staff, managing legal work and grants, developing relationships with Tribal communities, and maintaining appropriate caseloads while collaborating with senior staff and the Executive Director. The role involves office management, policy implementation, reporting, field-office hiring, and engagement with Tribes and Tribal organizations to pursue meaningful opportunities for service within the office's service territory. The position also includes regular interaction with Tribal leaders to ensure services meet regional needs, with an in-person office presence and optional telework on select days.

Required Qualifications

  • 1) Must have a J.D. degree.
  • 2) Be a licensed attorney admitted in and in good standing with the California Bar.
  • 3) Minimum of five years legal experience, preferably working with low-income Native Americans and/or Tribes, with substantial experience in federal Indian law or significant legal services practice. Equivalent general practice may be acceptable.
  • 4) Substantial experience and knowledge of civil litigation.
  • 5) Prior management and supervisory experience preferred.
  • 6) A commitment to high quality legal services for Native Americans.
