Job Summary
Direct Patient Volunteer provides companionship and emotional support to hospice patients and families in homes or facility settings. It is a non-clinical role under the supervision of hospice staff, focusing on presence, engagement, and contribution to the patient’s plan of care without hands-on medical tasks. Responsibilities include visiting patients, engaging in conversations, reading, music, or activities aligned with patient interests; supporting caregivers with respite visits; observing and reporting changes to the hospice team; maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance; and documenting visits according to hospice policy. The role emphasizes compassion, strong communication, and dependable attendance, with requirements for age, orientation/training, background checks, health screening, and local travel as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum Age Requirement 18+
- Completion of hospice orientation and training as well as competency validation, ongoing training, and performance evaluation as required by hospice policy
- Background check
- Health screening (including TB testing)
- Adherence to HIPAA and confidentiality policies
- Reliable attendance and communication, commitment to scheduled volunteer hours
- Adheres to infection control and safety procedures in accordance with hospice policy
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
- May require local travel
- Compassionate and empathetic demeanor
- Strong communication and listening skills
- Ability to maintain boundaries and patient confidentiality
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centered care
