Job Summary
Digitization-focused library technician role supporting a federal agency in the Washington, DC metro area. Responsible for clerical support of collection development activities and ensuring a steady, high-quality workflow through mass digitization and specialized programs. Tasks include metadata preparation, physical items handling, post-processing of digital image files, and applying digitization standards (notably FADGI). Duties involve locating, exporting, and formatting metadata from library catalogs and external sources, translating MARC bibliographic records into digital metadata formats, and supporting external partners (e.g., Internet Archive) in batch digitization workflows. Requires strong familiarity with library metadata and MARC, use of professional imaging/post-processing software, attention to detail, adherence to collection care procedures, and ability to document work and communicate findings. Physical requirements include lifting up to ~25 pounds and prolonged periods at a computer workstation. Required Qualifications
- Experience working with library or archival collections in a research library or cultural heritage environment
- Familiarity with bibliographic records and MARC records
- Experience with metadata creation or remediation for digitized collections
- Knowledge of digitization standards and best practices (FADGI familiarity strongly preferred)
- Experience using professional imaging or post-processing software
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet quality benchmarks
- Ability to handle physical library materials carefully and follow collection care procedures
- Comfort working with specialized equipment and troubleshooting basic technical issues
- Attention to detail and accurate data entry skills
- Ability to work within established policies and procedures
- Following through on assignments, projects, and duties
- Knowledge of classification and filing systems
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
