Diesel Mechanic Shop Manager

Job Summary

Supervise maintenance staff, coordinate repairs, and ensure fleet operations run smoothly according to State and Federal regulations. Check repair orders, inspect completed work, and communicate with dispatch regarding vehicle availability. Troubleshoot mechanical problems, train mechanics, and maintain correct procedures while managing parts inventory and subcontractor performance. Prepare reports, perform quality control inspections, and assist in drafting policies for vehicle replacements. Ensure environmental and safety compliance, manage after-hours emergencies, and drive as a substitute driver when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Diesel Mechanical experience
  • Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment
  • Ability to operate a PC and learn software applications
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to deal with problems and find solutions
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations including EPA and OSHA
  • Operational knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel and alternative fueled vehicles, and shop equipment and tools
  • Scheduling and setting priorities for work to be accomplished
  • Ability to inspect equipment and diagnose mechanical defects
  • High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized vehicle and equipment repair courses
  • Two to three years' experience as a Technician in the school bus, trucking or heavy equipment environment, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License with CDL, passenger and school bus endorsement, or ability to obtain one in 90 days of employment
  • Ability to regularly and safely lift heavy equipment over 50 lbs. frequently, and on occasion up to 100 pounds
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License and DOT physical or must be able to attain within 3 months of hire
  • Ability to safely lift heavy equipment (minimum of 50 lbs can be up to 100 pounds) frequently throughout the work day
  • Ability to attend work on a regular and dependable basis
  • Ability to successfully pass state and/or federal required Background Checks
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Ability to comply with all policies and procedures established by company
  • Must be eligible to work in the US without restrictions

Desired Qualifications

  • Propane/gasoline medium duty truck engine experience
  • ASE Certification(s)
