Job Summary
Monitor the safety and well-being of persons in custody, including frequent observation, CCTV checks, and monitoring prisoners in hospital settings. Organize meals, record prisoner activity in logs, and conduct cell searches while maintaining cellblock security by ensuring doors are locked and keys are stored safely. Ensure all personal effects are secured, handle laundry items, dispense approved medications, and monitor for suicidal tendencies. Maintain cell cleanliness and report damages, while performing fire safety checks and escort duties as required. Work on-call or casual backup shifts across days, evenings, and overnights at the Port Hardy RCMP Detachment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Occupational First Aid level 1 (St John's Ambulance OFA1 or equivalent)
- Able to obtain RCMP Reliability and Public Works Reliability Clearance
- Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English
- Visual standards are RCMP-V4 (eyeglasses permitted)
- Able to bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or the use of assistive devices
- Able to use both hands, occasionally manipulate/lift up to 20 kilograms, bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or the use of assistance devices
- Basic level computer skills
- Ability to remain in control under trying conditions
- Ability to be discrete
- Work effectively with other people
- Willingness to undergo detention guard training as required, including Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) training and refresher on a semi-annual basis
- Ability to work independently
- Conscientious, enthusiastic, and reliable
- Must be available for shifts across Vancouver Island and into the Yukon
- Must be available for On-Call/Casual Backup - Days, Evenings and Overnights
