Job Summary
Detention Guard responsibilities include monitoring the safety and well-being of persons in custody under RCMP supervision, performing duties such as observing prisoners (including CCTV), assisting with searches (training provided), organizing meals and logs, maintaining cellblock security and cleanliness, recording damages, and facilitating prisoner safety across shifts (days, evenings, overnights) at the Tofino RCMP Detachment with opportunities for advancement. Requires English proficiency, first aid certification, ability to lift up to 20 kg, basic computer skills, and the ability to work independently or with others; training in WHMIS and ongoing RCMP-related clearances are required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Occupational First Aid level 1 (St John’s Ambulance OFA1 or equivalent)
- RCMP Reliability and Public Works Reliability Clearance (RCMP Clearance can take 4 – 6 months to obtain)
- Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English
- Vision: RCMP-V4 standard
- Able to bend at the waist and climb stairs with or without restrictions
- Mobility to manipulate/lift up to 20 kilograms
- Basic level computer skills
- Ability to remain in control under trying conditions
- Ability to be discrete
- Work effectively with other people
- Willingness to undergo detention guard training including WHMIS training and refresher on a semi-annual basis
- Ability to work independently
- Conscientious, enthusiastic, and reliable
- First aid certification maintenance
