Job Summary
Detention Deputy duties include conducting head counts and door checks; classifying incoming inmates and fingerprinting; completing required paperwork; restraining inmates as needed; maintaining custody and a safe environment; supervising recreational, feeding, and hygiene activities; overseeing law library operations; inspecting cells and identifying inmates needing reclassification; preparing activity and incident reports; filing criminal charges on inmates violating penal code; assisting other staff; serving as interpreter for non-English inmates if bilingual; logging inmate activities; notifying supervisors about contraband or escape attempts; participating in emergency management activities during local disasters; and may be assigned to Transportation, Utility, Food Service, and Bailiff duties. Requires a high school diploma/GED, TCOLE certification (or enrollment) and related trainings, and completion of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test as part of the hiring process. Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- Basic (or higher) TCOLE Peace Officer Certification or enrollment in Texas Basic Police Academy and eligibility to take the TCOLE Licensing Exam within 45 days
- Must obtain and maintain TCOLE Basic Jailer Certification within the first year of employment
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Must be able to work rotating shifts
- Nelson-Denny Reading Test must be completed prior to moving forward in the hiring process (schedule via Sheriff's Office Human Resources)
