Job Summary
The Design Engineer II performs design calculations (heating/cooling loads, lighting, power distribution, and equipment sizing), prepares schematic layouts and supervises/assists CAD staff, lays out ductwork and piping systems, and develops specialized drawings (plumbing isometrics, risers, electrical riser diagrams). Selects equipment per basis of design, provides drawings and sketches for inclusion in project documents, researches design options and documents findings for Project Engineer/Manager, and maintains organized project files. Ensures drawings and designs conform to company standards and communicates workload status to the Project Manager. Requires a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, proficiency with Autodesk Revit and relevant load-calculation software, understanding of design codes, and a willingness to pursue additional licensing or credentialing. The role reports to the Project Manager and interacts with CAD designers, engineers, equipment suppliers, and clients/contractors.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years’ previous design experience at the Design Engineer 1 level or equivalent.
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or equivalent.
- Experience with Autodesk Revit and load calculation software such as IES VE, Trane TRACE 3D, or Carrier HAP. Experience with IES VE is a plus.
- Understanding of applicable design codes.
- Continues learning process by attending in-house seminars and continuing education opportunities outside of the office.
- Passing the Engineering-in-Training exam or obtaining a discipline-focused designer license is encouraged.
