Job Summary

Conduct intensive academic instruction in law enforcement combined with rigorous physical fitness training under close supervision at the P.O.S.T. Certified Academy. Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, and events while establishing and maintaining effective working relations with others. Read, understand, interpret, and apply complex policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work. Write clear, concise, comprehensive reports and perform routine clerical and record-keeping duties. Use good judgment in emergency or critical situations. Complete the POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery or the National Testing Network Frontline Test, followed by the Physical Abilities Test Work Sample Test Battery. Upon successful completion of the Academy, recruits will be sworn in as Peace Officers and promoted to Deputy Sheriff I.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate, such as the General Educational Development Certificate (State of California)
  • Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's License by the time of appointment to Deputy Sheriff I
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment to Deputy Sheriff I
  • If not a citizen of the United States, must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law (SB 960)
  • Read, understand, interpret, and apply complex policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work
  • Write clear, concise, comprehensive reports
  • Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, and events
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with others
  • Use good judgment in emergency or critical situations
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally, and in writing
  • Perform routine clerical and record-keeping duties
  • A thorough background investigation and psychological examination
  • No record of any felony conviction
  • Normal hearing in each ear
  • Far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses
  • Free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye
  • Excellent physical condition with above-average strength, endurance, and agility
  • Meet Commission-approved safety member physical standards
  • Complete the POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) or the National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline Test
  • Achieve a pass point of 42 on the POST PELLETB
  • Achieve a pass point of 60% Video, 85% Reading, and 80% Writing on the NTN Frontline Test
  • Complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB)
  • Achieve a pass point of 220 on the PAT/WSTB when taken with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office
