Job Summary
Complete a 26-week POST-approved police academy combining intensive academic instruction with rigorous physical fitness training. Upon graduation, graduate and be sworn in as a Peace Officer promoted to Deputy Sheriff. Attend specialized assignments including County Patrol, Investigations, K-9 Deputy, S.W.A.T., and various contract city services. Maintain eligibility for twelve months while awaiting appointment. The Office of the Sheriff operates as one of the most professional agencies in the United States, providing patrol services throughout the county and four contract cities. This continuous recruitment process offers career development opportunities within a department of over 1,100 employees.
Required Qualifications
- Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License
- Out of State valid motor vehicle operators license will be accepted during the application process
- Possession of a United States high school diploma
- G.E.D. Equivalency
- California high school proficiency certificate
- Attained a two-year, four-year or advanced degree from an accredited college or university
- The high school shall be a United States public school
- The high school shall be an accredited United States Department of Defense high school
- The high school shall be an accredited or approved public or nonpublic high school
- United States citizen
- Permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship a minimum of one year ago
- Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment
- Ability to meet such health standards as may be prescribed by the County Medical Consultant
- 20/20 uncorrected each eye
- Corrected to 20/30 each eye
- Must not have suffered a hearing loss of over 25 decibels in the 500, 1000 or 2000 frequency ranges
- A thorough background investigation including a polygraph examination
- A medical examination
- Psychological testing
