Deputy General Counsel - Labor, Employment & Employee Relations

Job Summary

Lead ALDI's labor, employment, and employee relations legal strategy by serving as the primary advisor on workforce management, compliance, and emerging risks. Manage complex workplace investigations, oversee high-impact litigation from inception to trial, and handle union organizing, collective bargaining, and unfair labor practice charges. Direct a team of attorneys and professionals while establishing performance expectations, recruiting staff, and driving process improvements across HR and legal functions. Provide strategic counsel to the National Board and executive leadership on hiring, firing decisions, EEOC charges, and OSHA matters. Liaise with business units to streamline processes, source external vendors, and ensure consistent workplace practices that mitigate risk and support a positive employee experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
  • Must be available for international and domestic travel up to 10%
  • Must be able to work remotely up to 3 days per week
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree
  • Must have a minimum of 9 years of progressive experience in a legal environment and retail operations
  • Must have experience in a law firm, corporate legal department and/or in-house legal counsel
  • Must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • Must be licensed to practice in Illinois (or have immediate ability to become licensed)
  • Must have expertise in employment and labor law
  • Must have knowledge of OSHA laws
  • Must have advanced knowledge of United States employment law
  • Must have an advanced comprehensive understanding of current Equal Employment Opportunity Commission policies and procedures
  • Must have an advanced comprehensive understanding of the National Labor Relations Board policies and procedures
  • Must understand the history, strategy, organizational authority, interdependence of job duties, products, systems, and services of the company
  • Must understand cost/benefit analyses
  • Must be able to anticipate legal risks
  • Must possess and demonstrate expertise with attention to detail
