Job Summary

Deputy Director, Government Affairs role leading federal lobbying and advocacy for a national gun safety organization. Responsibilities include directing federal lobbying before Congress and the Administration, developing legislative strategies, building relationships with Members of Congress and coalition partners, tracking federal developments, mentoring up to two Associate Directors across multiple states, supporting state/local campaigns, coordinating cross-functional advocacy initiatives, and aligning strategy with communications and research teams. Ideal candidate has 7+ years in government affairs or related fields, strong Congressional/Executive Branch experience, proven staff leadership, deep understanding of the federal legislative process, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Salary range is $135,000 to $147,000 per year, with comprehensive benefits.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in government affairs, Capitol Hill, political campaigns, advocacy, or related fields
  • Significant experience working in Congress, the Executive Branch, or senior-level political campaigns preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and leading complex advocacy or legislative efforts
  • Strong understanding of the federal legislative process and political landscape
  • Experience working across multiple levels of government and supporting coordinated campaigns
  • Strong relationship-building skills with policymakers, staff, coalition partners, and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strategic thinker with strong political judgment and execution skills
  • Existing relationships on Capitol Hill and within national advocacy coalitions
  • Preferred Experience - Experience managing federal lobbyists, campaign staff, or legislative teams
  • Background supporting both inside the building and outside the building advocacy strategies
  • Familiarity with state-government and local-government legislative campaigns and in-district organizing
