Job Summary
Deaf Mentor responsible for demonstrating and teaching natural communication and language strategies to families of Early Learning Center students. Will provide family support and consultation in-home or designated locations, offering information in ASL Language, Deaf History, Visual Communication, and Deaf Culture. SKI*HI Deaf Mentor Training will be provided on July 24-26; candidates must attend all three days. The role emphasizes mentorship and hands-on engagement with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and families, requiring ASL fluency, strong interpersonal skills, and lived Deaf experience. Security clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinting by the NYC Board of Ed, SCR, and SEL clearance. Start date flexible after training; available July 24-26 for training.
Required Qualifications
- Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual with lived experience navigating educational, social, and community settings as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to engage with families, students, and colleagues
- Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and youth
- Trained in the SKI*HI Deaf Mentor Program (Training will be provided)
- Regents or Local High School Diploma, or GED required
- Experience working with deaf students
