Job Summary
Day Care Program Substitute Assistant supports the Day Care Program Administrator in Frost Valley YMCA by delivering an orderly, safe, and engaging program for children ages 6 weeks through 6 years. Responsibilities include assisting with daily lesson plans and activities, coordinating snacks, meals, nap time, and bathroom activities, maintaining classroom cleanliness and basic housekeeping, communicating with parents and the administrator about lessons and progress, and ensuring health and safety per state licensing standards. The role includes assisting with behavior management, supervising day-to-day operations, and functioning as an Assistant Teacher to support age-appropriate skill development, arts and crafts, indoor/outdoor play, and direct child care tasks such as feeding infants, diapering, toilet training, and hygiene. Requires adherence to a formal sign-in/out procedure, ability to follow a behavior management plan, and willingness to perform all other duties as assigned. Must be able to pass a fingerprint/background check and obtain First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (can be earned upon hire). Provides part-time/per diem schedule and participates in a team-oriented, nurturing environment. The position is located in Claryville, NY, and is offered at $17-$18 per hour.
Required Qualifications
- One year of education towards an Associate’s Degree with the intent to obtain a degree in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, or related field or equivalent experience working with children
- Previous experience working with children under 6 years of age in a formal program (child care, day camp, after school, etc.)
- Minimum of one year of experience caring for and directly interacting with children ages 6 weeks to 6 years
- Desire to work with children between 6 weeks and 6 years in an active child care setting to create a safe, fun and nurturing environment
- Reliable, detail oriented, motivated and personable
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; outstanding character, enthusiasm, patience, adaptability, sound judgment and a sense of humor
- Able to work well with a team of others
- Fingerprint/background check requirement
- First Aid, CPR and AED certified (certifications can be earned upon hire)
