Job Summary
Data Scientist role at DHS to join Allegheny County DHS data science team; engineering-focused data scientist or software engineer/systems architect with experience in machine learning or economics, building software for integrated human services data, and collaborating with academics to drive applied research. Responsibilities include developing predictive models and causal inference methods, delivering inference at scale, improving DHS programs and operations, and building reusable software with a cross-functional team (Analytics, Technology, program managers, leadership). Requires Python competency, and a graduate degree or equivalent experience in CS or related field; demonstrated ability to produce maintainable software and to apply ML/causal models to real-world problems; emphasis on simplicity, end-to-end research, and impact over technical complexity. Includes encouragement to apply even if not fully qualified across subfields; employed by CAI and affiliated with Allegheny County DHS.
Required Qualifications
- Has a core competency in Python and abstract, hierarchical design
- Has a graduate degree or significant experience in computer science or related field
- Has a track record of developing high-quality, well-structured, and maintainable software applications
- Experience with applied research and/or industry experience in building machine learning or causal models to answer real-world problems
- Balances speed of delivery with high standards on quality
- Desires to develop, test, and QC software to facilitate end-to-end applied research
