Dance Accompanist

Job Summary
Play piano or drum accompaniment for studio dance classes, using appropriate improvisation or music scores to enhance student aesthetic learning. Adjust tempo, rhythm, and phrasing to match the mood, style, and intention of the movement, while observing dancers and listening to the instructor to offer complementary music. Perform other assigned duties as requested. Arrive on time to every class with rare incidences of absence. Assignment hours vary each semester depending on need. This seasonal, fixed-term staff position supports the university's mission of inclusive excellence and intellectual engagement within the Los Angeles arts community.
Required Qualifications
- experienced music professional
- at least 3 years experience accompanying ballet and/or modern dance
- Minimum 3 years experience in studio and/or academic settings
- Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: music repertory for dance and appropriate modes of music improvisation
- Demonstrated ability to arrive on time to every class with rare incidences of absence
- Ability to focus on what each class demands, watch dancers and listen to instructor, offer music that complements dance work performed by the students
