Job Summary
Support the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical intervention by applying traction or counter-traction, maintaining hemostasis, and assisting with wound closure. Demonstrate competencies in cardiothoracic procedures, techniques, and equipment required for the cardiovascular operating room. Function interdependently with the cardiovascular surgeon to perform safe operations that yield optimal patient results. Provide technical assistance and support to medical/surgical staff during procedures, specializing in services such as heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, or conduction system work. Requires First Assistant Certification, two years of cardiac surgery experience, and knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass and advanced sterile technique.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of Accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program
- First Assistant Certification
- Two years of cardiac surgery experience
- Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures pertaining to heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system
- Knowledge of equipment/instrument operation and care
- Knowledge of implant preparation
- Knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology
- Knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass
- Knowledge of advanced sterile technique and asepsis
- BCLS certification
- Knowledge of medical ethics
- Good vision, hearing and manual dexterity: ability to transfer patients safe from bed/stretcher to operating room table
