Job Summary

Sweep, vacuum, dust mop, wet mop, scrub, strip, wax, and burnish floors; clean and disinfect classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, and common areas; empty trash receptacles and replenish restroom supplies. Operate custodial equipment including floor scrubbers, buffers, and vacuums while following OSHA regulations and manufacturer guidelines. Inspect assigned areas daily to report safety hazards, water leaks, or maintenance concerns immediately. Set up and remove furniture, bleachers, and equipment for meetings and athletic events; open and secure school buildings as assigned. Maintain school grounds free of litter and debris, and participate in summer cleaning projects and facility preparation for the school year. Work 7:03 am to 5:30 pm across various sites for 203 days in a 4-day week.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be physically capable of performing all essential job functions
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment and cleaning machinery safely
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and supplies
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, and the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and heavier objects with assistance
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, lift, carry, push, pull, and reach overhead
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Must follow OSHA regulations, district safety procedures, and manufacturer guidelines for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and materials
  • Must be able to report accidents, injuries, unsafe conditions, and security concerns immediately to the supervisor
  • Must be able to adhere to assigned work schedule and maintain regular attendance
  • Must be able to accept direction and guidance from supervisory personnel
  • Must be able to complete assigned duties in a timely and professional manner
  • Must be able to open and secure school buildings as assigned
  • Must be able to participate in required district training and professional development
  • Must be able to perform other duties deemed necessary by the Principal, Manager/Director of Facilities, Assistant Manager of Facilities, or designee
  • Must be able to demonstrate reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality
  • Must be able to properly notify the supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness
  • Must be able to begin and complete assigned work within established timelines
  • Must be able to consistently appear in attire appropriate for the work environment and assigned duties
  • Must be able to protect District resources through the appropriate use and care of facilities, equipment, and supplies
  • Must be able to utilize proper body mechanics and safe work practices to prevent injury
  • Must be able to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public
  • Must be able to keep buildings and school grounds clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe at all times
  • Must be able to sweep, vacuum, dust mop, wet mop, scrub, strip, wax, and burnish floors as assigned
  • Must be able to clean and disinfect classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, locker rooms, gyms, hallways, and common areas
  • Must be able to clean desks, tables, counters, doors, windows, walls, drinking fountains, and other surfaces
  • Must be able to empty trash and recycling receptacles and properly dispose of waste
  • Must be able to replenish restroom supplies, soap dispensers, paper towels, toilet tissue, and hand sanitizer
  • Must be able to clean interior and exterior windows, glass, and entrance doors as assigned
  • Must be able to clean classroom whiteboards, display surfaces, and other instructional areas
  • Must be able to maintain entrances, sidewalks, and walkways free of litter, debris, snow, and ice as necessary
  • Must be able to keep school grounds free of litter and perform light grounds cleanup as assigned
  • Must be able to set up and remove tables, chairs, bleachers, stages, and equipment for meetings, athletic events, performances, and other district activities
  • Must be able to move furniture and equipment as required for classroom changes, maintenance projects, and special events
  • Must be able to inspect assigned areas daily and immediately report safety hazards, vandalism, damaged equipment, water leaks, or other maintenance concerns to the supervisor through established work order procedures
  • Must be able to maintain custodial closets, storage areas, and custodial equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition
  • Must be able to review assigned work orders and complete custodial requests promptly
  • Must be able to monitor custodial supply inventory and notify the supervisor when supplies require replenishment
  • Must be able to assist with summer cleaning projects and preparation of facilities for the opening and closing of the school year
  • Must be able to perform other duties deemed necessary by the Principal, Manager/Director of Facilities, Assistant Manager of Facilities, or designee
  • Must be able to acknowledge receipt and understanding of this job description

Desired Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred
  • Experience working in a school or public facility is desirable
