Job Summary
Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for Hesston Elementary School by cleaning classrooms, corridors, restrooms, and outdoor areas daily. Operate building equipment and machinery as required, while sweeping, shoveling, and sanding walks. Secure the building each evening by closing doors, setting alarms, turning off lights, and ensuring all windows are locked. Perform minor repairs, report major issues, and regulate HVAC systems to ensure appropriate temperatures. Monitor emergency lights, check exit signage, and immediately report unauthorized persons or damaged property to the supervisor. Follow all district policies, statutes, and flag etiquette procedures while responding to interruptions in a productive manner.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to work independently without supervision
- Experience and knowledge in the areas of electrical, maintenance, and carpentry
- Ability to lift and carry 100 pounds unassisted
- Ability to work in and around dust, fumes, and odors
- Ability to work in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions
- Must work indoors and outdoors year round in a variety of temperatures
- Ability to operate all equipment and machinery as required
- Ability to sweep, shovel, and sand walks as appropriate
- Ability to close buildings each school day, set alarms at the end of the evening shift, and secure building
- Ability to take down flags, following proper flag etiquette, including proper disposal of worn flags
- Ability to regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season, ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity, and maintain mechanical equipment as directed
- Ability to check emergency and exit lights
- Ability to ensure all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off (except as necessary for safety reasons) at the close of school each day
- Ability to immediately report unauthorized persons on the school premises to the principal or supervisor
- Ability to immediately report damaged school property to the principal or supervisor
- Ability to make minor building repairs, and promptly report needed major repairs to the supervisor
- Ability to keep current on new information, innovative ideas and techniques
- Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner
- Ability to communicate well and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community
- Ability to react to changes and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, and handle other tasks as assigned
