Job Summary
Custodian Lead at the Sanford Underground Research Facility oversees first-line custodial supervision, coordinates heavy cleaning tasks (floors, rugs, restrooms, windows), maintains custodial supply inventory, and supports safety/compliance. Responsibilities include scheduling work assignments, training staff in cleaning techniques and safety procedures, operating and maintaining power equipment (e.g., forklifts, carpet extractors), and performing light maintenance. Works on-site with potential shifts and weekend coverage; requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication to ensure a clean, safe environment in surface and underground areas.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Minimum of four years of custodial experience
- Minimum one year in a supervisory/leadership role
- Strong leadership and team coordination skills
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods and maintenance techniques
- Familiarity with chemical safety regulations and handling hazardous materials
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete tasks accurately and efficiently
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Adaptability to changing priorities and work conditions
- Ability to guide, train and mentor custodial staff
- Understanding and compliance with SURF’s safety programs
