Job Summary
Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance of school facilities by sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; dusting blinds, curtains, and screens; and polishing furniture, metal work, and woodwork. Sanitize restrooms, plumbing fixtures, fountains, and biohazard storage areas; pick up litter, empty trash containers, and clean windows, walls, walkways, patios, and other outside areas. Operate vehicles, climb ladders to clean lighting equipment and replace bulbs, rearrange furniture, and maintain stock of supplies and cleaning tools. Ensure building security by locking doors and windows, reporting hazards or suspicious activity, and denying unauthorized access. Adhere to safe work procedures, mix and dilute cleaners correctly, and provide guidance to other custodial staff as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work
- Knowledge of the proper care and storage of custodial equipment and materials
- Knowledge of dilution of cleaning chemicals/conversion of pH charts and of the use of MSDS
- Ability to recognize potential safety problems and to take steps to prevent hazards
- Ability to operate modern mechanical equipment such as floor vacuums (wet and dry), floor buffers, carpet shampoo and steam cleaners, mops, brooms, dust pans, ladders, small hand tools, computer (timecard entry) and vehicles
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds
- Occasionally lift and/or move over fifty pounds
- Close vision
- Ability to adjust focus
Desired Qualifications
- One year of previous custodial experience preferred
