Job Summary
Conduct daily custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and disinfecting school buildings, restrooms, and grounds. Sweep sidewalks, shovel snow, and apply de-icing compounds while inspecting heating systems for safety issues. Drive a bus safely along assigned routes, making pre-checks, monitoring student behavior, and ensuring all students depart at designated stops. Handle vehicle breakdowns and accidents per district procedures, maintaining clean vehicles and accurate records. Work 8:00am to 4:30pm for 10 months under general supervision. Requires high school graduation, two years custodial experience, and five years responsible driving experience with a valid Commercial Driver's License and passenger endorsement.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from high school
- Two years of experience in custodial work, or and combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions
- 5 years of responsible driving experience
- Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course
- Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination
- Must be able to pass the required DOT Drug Screen with negative results
- Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Must be able to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time
- Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information
- Requires the ability to read simple forms
- Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format
- Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
- Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment
- Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Requires the ability to be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress
- Requires valid NC driver's license and school bus driver's license
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in custodial work
- General knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment
- General understanding of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
- Ability to follow a written schedule
