Job Summary
Conduct daily custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and disinfecting high-touch areas across school buildings. Sweep sidewalks, shovel snow, and apply de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways. Drive school buses safely to destinations, following district procedures and monitoring student behavior during rides. Pick up and drop off students at designated stops, ensuring all students depart at usual times. Perform vehicle pre-checks, record malfunctions, and maintain bus cleanliness. Open and secure buildings, adjust heating and air conditioning, and empty trash receptacles. Requires high school graduation, two years of custodial experience, and five years of responsible driving experience with a valid Commercial Driver's License and Passenger Endorsement. Schedule is 8:00am to 4:30pm for ten months.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from high school
- Two years of experience in custodial work, or and combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions
- 5 years of responsible driving experience
- Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course
- Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination
- Must be able to have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results
- Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement
- Valid NC driver's license
- School bus driver's license
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Must be able to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information
- Ability to read simple forms
- Ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment
- Ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment
- Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs
- Must be able to lift 10 lbs
- Must be able to lift medium to heavy physical work
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in custodial work
- General knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment
- General understanding of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
- Ability to follow a written schedule
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
