Job Summary

Cryogenic Systems Engineering Manager at LLNL leads and oversees cryogenic operations and cryo engineering teams, providing strategic direction, design/integration of cryogenic test systems, and readiness activities for shot campaigns at the National Ignition Facility. Responsibilities include leading programs with technical focus, mentoring staff, ensuring safety and compliance, developing innovative methods and technologies, and collaborating across disciplines to advance cryogenic capabilities. Requires on-site full-time work, DOE Q-level clearance, and a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field; compensation in the $227k–$288k annual range plus relocation support and benefits.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with cryogenic systems and experience leading cryogenic operations and engineering teams in complex, high-consequence technical environments
  • Extensive experience making sound technical judgements and extensive decision-making skills, especially during off-normal events or rapidly evolving operational conditions
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to lead a team, communicate effectively and collaborate with technical support personnel on requirements, design, safety, construction, or modification of process, and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative methods and technologies

  • Experience in planning and directing complex technical programs
  • MS degree in related field (desirable)
  • Experience in NIF or Target Area Experimental Systems (TExS) cryogenic or target-fielding environments (desirable)
