Job Summary
Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary while staying within the crosswalk. Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps and communicate crossing rules to students and adults. Distribute traffic control signs and markers, direct traffic movement using signs, flags, and hand signals, and report incidents involving students to the building principal. Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to the appropriate supervisor. This role requires a Colorado state identification card, a high school diploma, and adherence to Colorado Department of Transportation requirements regarding conduct and equipment. A criminal background check and fingerprinting are required for hire. Extended periods of standing and walking are necessary in outdoor weather conditions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Average intelligence
- Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant drivers
- Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provides approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle's STOP message during the entire crossing movement
- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury

- An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students
- Intermediate knowledge of proper bicycle/pedestrian practices
- Colorado state identification card

- Ability to adhere to Colorado Department of Transportation requirements regarding conduct while on duty (no eating, smoking, tobacco, liquor, unauthorized radio/headphone use, reading materials, or mobile device use except in emergencies)
