Job Summary
Crisis Responder on the Metropolitan Peace Academy (MPA) team. Provide rapid crisis response, de-escalation, and mediation to prevent violence and support community safety. Responsibilities include mediating disputes at large gatherings and during civil unrest, building trust with diverse individuals (including at-risk youth and gang members), collaborating with local businesses and organizations to promote safety, identifying individuals or groups at elevated risk, connecting people to supportive services (mental health, housing, employment, social services), providing follow-up to support healing, participating in team meetings and case reviews, and maintaining confidential documentation of incidents and interventions. Requires strong conflict mediation, verbal de-escalation, data-entry and documentation skills, knowledge of community resources, ability to work independently and in a team, willingness to work flexible on-call schedules including evenings, overnights, and weekends, and a valid driver’s license for travel to events. Located in Chicago, IL with on-site work arrangements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent education, required.
- 1+ years of relative experience including (but not limited to): crisis intervention, verbal de-escalation, clinical work in a mental health setting, required.
- Experience in community outreach, violence prevention, youth development, social services, crisis intervention, or restorative justice programs.
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Training or certification in mediation, de-escalation, or crisis response, preferred.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish or other languages common in the community, preferred.
- Lived experience with challenges related to violence, justice system involvement, or trauma, with the ability to serve as a positive role model.
- Knowledge of local resources such as housing, employment, mental health, and social services.
