Job Summary
Criminal Firearms Examiner II analyzes forensic firearms evidence and conducts mechanical examinations of pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns. Responsibilities include test-fire procedures, comparing test-fired bullets and cartridge cases to scene evidence, performing serial-number restoration, conducting BrassTrax and Matchpoint+ analyses within the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), issuing reports, and testifying as an expert witness in municipal, state, and federal courts. Maintains chain of custody and laboratory compliance with ISO 17025-2017 standards, maintains reference collections, and conducts instrument maintenance. Strong analytical, written communication, and ability to work independently in a laboratory setting within the Unified Forensic Laboratory supporting Aurora Police Department, with a focus on safety and accurate reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in forensic science, a physical or natural science, or a directly related field
- 3 years of experience as a firearms examiner in a law enforcement laboratory or related environment
- Certification by the Association Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (preferred)
- Knowledge of ISO 17025-2017 accreditation requirements as they apply to firearms examination
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Licenses and Certifications Required: valid Colorado Driver’s License
